Central Saint Martins presents The Intelligent Optimist
Knowledge Quarter partner, Central Saint Martins, presents The Intelligent Optimist as part of The London Design Festival. An exhibition that explores various futures for design across most design disciplines, presenting shots of hope and canny intelligence. It’s set in the Lethaby Gallery within Central Saint Martins building at the heart of the Knowledge Quarter from 19 September 2015– and entrance is free!
The exhibition features the work of more than 50 of this year’s key graduates from Central Saint Martins Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design, Graphics and Communication, Jewellery and Textiles, Spatial Practices and Fashion Programmes.
‘If we’re looking for new ways to deal with some of today’s key issues, then the solutions require inventive, inspiring, sobering, witty, magical, rigorous alternative visions. I am proud to say CSM graduates continue to rise to these challenges, and The Intelligent Optimist presents their collective spirit.’ Anne Smith, Dean of Academic Programmes
The Future Gazers, Material Explorers, Social Agents and Fixers all use creative practices and critical intelligence to propose provocative and hopeful new perspectives. This intelligence takes different forms: the rigour of traditional enquiry; the emotional intelligence of empathy; tacit intelligences built through experience; the special kind of touch-based or haptic intelligence where hand meets mind, and so on. In all cases the intelligence is deployed in a productive manner to transform the status quo or to imagine new and better futures.
Exhibition: 19 September to 17 October 2015
Alongside the exhibition the Lethaby Gallery will host The Intelligent Optimist events programme, a week-long series of events by the exhibitors including talks, demos and workshops. All events are free but must be booked in advance. For the full list of events click here
